This area of Chicago, known as the “Chicago Lawn,” is a stable home to second- and third-generation families, among them a fast-growing Latino population, one of the most economically influential groups in the country. Despite its dense population, the area is largely underserved. The Cannery addresses that retail opportunity, connecting existing retail with additional large anchor tenants, junior box retailers, a mix of community and specialty retailers, and restaurants, all in Main Street format. The “Neighborhub” concept, created by General Growth, is a pedestrian- focused, mixed-use destination specifically designed to appeal to ethnic communities underserved by retailers. With 345,000 SF of retail, 55,000 SF of entertainment, a 30,000 SF community center, and over 1600 parking spaces, the Cannery promises to become a community gathering place and the prototype for future Neighborhubs in cities across the country.
